In today’s climate, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives can often trigger a range of reactions. However, I, along with my national award-winning team at the Office of Inclusive Excellence, remain committed to the belief that inclusion isn’t just a trend – it’s the right thing to do. Our goal is simple yet mighty: to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included at the College of Engineering.
Let’s remember that the DEI body of work is fundamentally about ensuring people from all backgrounds have access and opportunity to meaningfully engage. It’s important that we provide a safe space for everyone to share their perspectives and experiences. Our new Inclusive Excellence Faculty Fellowship program is designed to train a generation of equity practitioners in engineering education. I am excited to see our inaugural group of 13 fellows enhance our students’ equity and inclusion experiences and innovate in the classroom.
The introduction of the new OIE Advisory Board marks another significant step forward in bringing everyone together to pursue this transformative work. We are focused on expanding both our team and our reach. Over the past two and a half years, we have worked hard to integrate DEI principles into every aspect of the College’s operations, creating a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
Each of us has a role to play in fostering a culture of learning and growth. Together, we can embrace the journey toward a future where inclusive excellence is not just an ideal, but a reality we live by. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in building a welcoming engineering community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Karen Thomas-Brown
Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
