As I reflect on our progress in our ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), I am inspired to see the positive impact that knowledge and resources have made within our community.
These conversations, sessions and workshops, both online and offline, developed by the Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE) have played a pivotal role for DEI in the College of Engineering. Recently, a faculty member reached out for assistance in integrating an OIE resource as an extra credit assignment. Collaborations like this demonstrate our efficient and strategic approach to providing timely, engaging resources.
We want each member of our community to take ownership of the equity practices and inclusive spaces we are vitalizing. That’s why we’re introducing the new Inclusive Excellence Faculty Fellowship Program (IEFFP). Aimed at supporting more DEI change agents in our community, IEFFP will help to not only enhance DEI knowledge and practice in undergraduate classes but also grow the number of engineering courses with Diversity (DIV) designation at the college level. Imagine the positive impact we can achieve when we work collaboratively towards our shared goal of promoting inclusivity and belonging in everyone's lives, so that it becomes a natural part of our work and life, like breathing air.
Our efforts are making an impact, with growing numbers of people seeking our support. When OIE was created in 2021, the challenge wasn't a lack of awareness or willingness to act. The missing piece was a unified voice guiding these efforts, and now we’re tapping into the potential that has always been there.
Our DEI strategy is the result of hours spent understanding our community through climate survey data, identifying knowledge gaps, and addressing the needs within our community. As a team, we've delved into existing systems and practices, working to foster collective ownership of our efforts to become more inclusive and equitable.
Looking ahead, we are focused on helping everyone realize their role in this transformative work. Let's continue our strategic and collaborative approach to make DEI an integral part of our community's ethos.
Sincerely,
Dr. Karen Thomas-Brown
Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
