Education

Ph.D. Bioengineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019
B.S. Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, India, 2014

Shachi Mittal joins the Department of Chemical Engineering this fall. Mittal combines advanced biomedical imaging with machine learning for early cancer detection. As a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she developed spectroscopy-based molecular profiling and deep learning based digital diagnostic methods for breast cancer.

At the UW, Mittal plans to investigate molecular, genomic, and immunological signatures of cancer to develop individualized disease management approaches. These multiscale measurements will be complemented with artificial intelligence to enable comprehensive characterization of disease and assist in early intervention strategies for improved patient outcomes.
